Save Your Vision Month

Save Your Vision Month

National_Vision_Month.jpegSave Your Vision Month is sponsored by the American Optometric Association. This annual early-spring observance reminds us of the importance of preserving and maintaining eye health by having regular eye exams at Rochester Eye and Laser Center. In keeping with that “visionary” theme, it’s also National Eye Donor Month (promoting cornea transplant awareness) and Workplace Eye Wellness Month (promoting awareness of job-related eye injuries).

For those with normal eye health, this general schedule is a good one to follow:

  • Infants: Pediatric screening at 6 months
  • Preschool children: Pediatric screenings from age 3 to 6
  • School-age children: Regular vision screenings at school
  • Adults: Every 2 years
  • Adults over 60: Annually

If your child’s pediatrician or school suspects a vision problem, or if you have a history of eye disease or eye problems in your family, a full eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist will be recommended. Children and adults who wear glasses or contacts should have an eye exam every year.

It is important to maintain contact with your eye doctor even if you’ve had LASIK vision correction or Blade-Free Laser Cataract removal, and no longer need glasses or contacts. Regular eye exams can identify common eye diseases, such as those with no outward symptoms, such as diabetic retinopathy. Even if you are not experiencing any vision changes, certain conditions like glaucoma or cataracts can be “silent thieves,” stealing your vision – even if you’ve had LASIK. Early detection is the best way to protect and preserve your vision.

Regular eye exams can also protect your overall health. For example, by examining blood vessels in the eyes, your eye doctor can also identify chronic systemic diseases, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

Eye exams at Rochester Eye and Laser Center are typically quick and painless, so get ready for spring with us. Call 585-232-2560 to schedule your eye exam today and be ready for the joys of warm weather activity knowing you’ve made an important investment in your health!
