LASIK and Reading Glasses

A frequent question we receive at Rochester Eye & Laser Center is, “Can LASIK vision correction eliminate the need for reading glasses?” The answer is both yes and no.

Let’s begin by reviewing what LASIK corrects. LASIK is most commonly chosen by patients to address refractive errors that impact their vision, either from childhood or developed over time. These conditions include:

- Myopia (nearsightedness): blurry distance vision

- Hyperopia (farsightedness): blurry near vision

- Astigmatism: distorted or blurry vision at all distances

As we reach our 40s, many of us experience another vision change known as presbyopia, which makes it harder to focus on close objects. This age-related condition develops as the natural lens of the eye gradually loses flexibility, leading to the familiar challenge of reading up close. Over-the-counter reading glasses or prescription readers are often recommended to manage these changes.

It’s important to note that LASIK is not designed to correct presbyopia. LASIK reshapes the cornea, allowing light to focus more accurately on the retina and improving overall vision, but presbyopia results from changes within the lens, not the cornea.

For those looking to reduce reliance on reading glasses, there is an alternative — monovision LASIK. With monovision, one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other for near tasks, providing functional vision across a range of distances. To ensure comfort, we often recommend a monovision trial with contact lenses before surgery so you can experience this unique vision balance.

If you’re hoping to avoid reading glasses due to convenience, lifestyle, or personal preference, monovision LASIK or other customized solutions may be right for you. Our team is dedicated to helping you find the most effective option.
