LASIK & Large Pupils

Written by The Rochester Eye & Laser Team | Jul 26, 2016 7:52:52 PM

If you are considering LASIK vision correction surgery and you have large pupils, you may have heard that the procedure could possibly increase the risk of certain side effects, such as halos or a glare around lights at night.

Numerous studies over the past decades have examined the effect of pupil size on LASIK outcomes. While the evidence is not conclusive, researchers have discovered some interesting correlations in the size of the surgical ablation zone (the section of the cornea that is reshaped by the laser), the follow-up period, and night vision problems.  A summary of what they found:

No Night Vision Problems

  • Ablation zone 6.0 mm in diameter or larger
  • Follow-up period at least three months

Some Night Vision Problems

  • Ablation zone smaller than 6.0 mm in diameter
  • No ablation size specified
  • Follow-up period of less than three months

It is certainly prudent to know the facts about possible night vision issues following LASIK. And the best way to determine your suitability for LASIK and any possible side effects is to make an appointment for a free LASIK Consultation with our surgeon and founder, Dr. Kenneth Lindahl. During the Consultation you can ask Dr. Lindahl specific questions about LASIK side effects and inquire about the results of past LASIK patients.
