PREMIUM IOLs
After age 45, replacement of the eye’s lens with advanced Presbyopia-correcting Premium IOLs is the only way to obtain both distance and up close vision without glasses.
Most patients who choose premium IOLs can enjoy excellent vision, free from glasses, and never have to worry again about cataracts or changes in prescription.
A premium IOL could be a better overall vision correction option for a baby-boomer, or cataract patient, than having LASIK eye surgery.
There are two types of Premium IOLs:
- Toric IOLs for Astigmatism - The Toric IOL makes it possible to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve distance vision. Toric IOLs have been successfully implanted in more than 25 million eyes since 1991.
- Premium Presbyopia-correcting IOLs – Presbyopia-correcting lenses offer the possibility of seeing well at more than one distance – far, close, and everything in between, without glasses or contact lenses. There are two categories of these Premium IOLs – ‘Multifocal’ and ‘Accommodating’:
Premium Multifocal IOLs
Multifocal intraocular lenses can have up to five focusing zones precalculated on the lens, and enable most people to see the big picture, even in low light, without missing the details.
There are several types and brands of these lenses – some providing better reading vision than others, some may be the best option for people who do a lot of night driving.
At Rochester Eye & Laser Center we have a number of brands and types of premium IOLs to offer, and can recommend the best combination for your unique pair of eyes.
Premium Accommodating IOLs
These are the most advanced type of Premium IOL. "Accommodation" refers to the ability of the eye to change focus using the small muscles that regulate the shape and position of the natural lens. An Accommodating IOL is a flexible artificial lens that:
- Utilizes the eye’s internal muscles to shift focus in the same way as a natural lens
- Unlike multifocal IOLs, does not need to split light between various focusing zones to achieve their function
- Provides generally superior overall image quality than a multifocal IOL.
Facts about this new type of Accommodating IOL:
- Most patients are able to read the newspaper or phone book without glasses.
- Most patients are able to see their computers and dashboards without glasses.
- Most patients are able to see 20/40 or better at a distance without glasses.
- More than twice the number of patients implanted with this new technology could see well at all distances compared to a standard IOL.
- Many of our patients at Rochester Eye & Laser Center are completely independent of their reading glasses, bifocals or contact lenses.
